ENERGY
Paper manufacturers require large amounts of electricity to operate their machinery. To produce the steam necessary to dry paper, manufacturers often used fossil fuels such as coal, oil and gas. This releases GREENHOUSE GASES (Carbon Dioxide) into the atmosphere, the leading cause of climate fluctuation and change.
Seaman Paper Company of Massachusetts has transitioned our primary thermal energy source from an oil-based generating system to one fueled by wood chips (recycled “scrap” pallets). Utilizing wood fuels is considered to be Greenhouse Gas Neutral, as trees quickly reabsorb the carbon dioxide emitted, while it takes millions of years to recapture the carbon dioxide from fossil fuels. Thus, our net emission of greenhouse gases has been reduced by 70%.
Burning wood chips provides pallet manufacturers throughout New England the opportunity to dispose of their broken pallets in an environmentally-positive fashion, without further impacting area landfills.
Since 2002, our electricity usage (per ton of paper) has been reduced by 12% via corporate ENERGY CONSERVATION PROGRAMS.
